.............Our sailing area

Ijsselmeer Lake and costal Northsea

I usually put out the SY Trixania Mawi early in the year, from time to time even a few days before saison is starting.
For the weekend - still only - the skipper and his mate have to get warm clothes on, to get through the early spring...thinking about warmer days to come.
The Ijsselmeer Lake - formerly a part of the Northsea - is a well protected sailing area because of the Enclosure Dike and an additional one between Enkhuizen and Lelystad. Stll one must not underestimate it. In sailing directory books or harbour handbooks warnings are intensive, especially for small open crafts. If it is windy (Bft 5 or more) short and steep waves build up; conditions, which are up to selfunderstood boundaries challenging and attractive - again and again.

Fascination of sailing
Upwind, Bft 5-6, sometimes 7

The Ijsselmeer is an easy to navigate area, just a few flats are to avoid. Additionally one can reach a harbour in less than 15 nm. So it happens in summer, when the wind is accidentially weak, that sailors just drop the anchor in the given lee of a dike or make port in one of the big escape harbours.
On the other hand one has to get along with navigational problems and seamanship in the close Northsea or the tidal shallows, otherwise luck might quickly take over. If you don't plan to sail over Whitsun f.e. to Vlieland or Terschelling, you have a good chance to lie alongside. If the wind fits, you will expierience an exciting turn with a pushing current. For short vacations one might plan to sail to further islands through the Nothsea, not to furl sails, although they were just set.

Ijsselmeer Lake and the Northsea are a sailing area to be almost satisfied with, allright, it could be a bit warmer in spring and autumn...
